The Top Five Dangers for Business Owners |

This month we thank David Wolfskehl for contributing this artlcle. Dave is a professional speaker, facilitator, and business coach. If you are interested in a unique career working with New Jersey's top business professionals a meeting with David could change your life.
The Top Five Dangers for Business Owners
Small to mid-sized business owners are usually very good at what they do. Despite that fact, many fail each year. If being good at the product side of the business does not guarantee success, what factors are being overlooked or ignored?
In his must read book, “The E-myth Revisited”, author Michael Gerber states that business owners need to have foster a split personality in order to succeed.
The successful owner needs to operate in three distinct, separate and conflicting roles:
1. The Technician who concentrates on the task of the business. Most business owners operate in this capacity
2. The Entrepreneur who concentrates on the future vision and development of the business.
3. The Manager who concentrates on the systems of the business
Most small to mid-sized business owners simply lack the time, resources or expertise to operate effectively and efficiently in all three roles. Most often, the business owner is quickly consumed by the “doing” of the business and ignores the business development and systems development that are needed to take the business to the next level. It is sad, but many people who started there own business have really only bought themselves another “job” instead of a vehicle which could be used to accomplish their dreams.
The old saying that “When you are up to your elbows in alligators, it is difficult to remind yourself that your initial objective was to drain the swamp”, has never been more true for small to mid-sized business owners. There are many dangers lurking out there that can affect the growth of their businesses or even cause their demise if unaddressed.
Our third party research has revealed that the top five dangers that most business owners face are:
1. Business Planning - lack of a well developed and executable business plan
2. Marketing Planning – lack of a well developed and executable sales and marketing plan
3. Accounting Systems – poor financial processes, systems and cash flow management
4. Human Capital – poor employee hiring, training and development
5. Communications – ineffective communications with suppliers, customers and employees
When A business owner is working in his business instead of on his business he is rarely working on the projects that will determine his long term success.Business Advisers International is a solution for companies facing dangers in these areas. We turn ideas into actions to impact businesses.

Is Your Outlook Express Providing You with the Highest Security? |

If you use Outlook Express to access email from home or for those of you who might be using it in your office environments the following tech tip could save you from many hours of agrevation.
Everyone wants some added security to their email. Outlook Express offers you the option to make sure you are getting the highest security for your email that you can. The following instructions will walk you through setting your security within outlook express to prevent your computer from being used by some viruses and exploits to send mass amounts of spam or redistribute viruses. Additionally, by blocking attachments from opening automatically you can greatly reduce your exposure to many forms of viruses or malicious adware. Just follow these simple steps:
1. Choose Tools, Options.
2. Click the Security tab, and select the button that reads: Restricted sites zone (More secure).
3. Make sure that the Warn Me When Other Applications Try to Send Mail as Me check box has a check mark in it.
This setting may prevent a virus from surreptitiously spreading itself.
4. Select the Do Not Allow Attachments To Be Saved or Opened That Could Potentially Be a Virus check box. If you expect to receive programs, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, or Access databases, you may need to turn this setting off because all of these types of files can contain viruses. But start out with it turned on.
5. Select the Block Images and Other External Content in HTML E-mail check box. Images in e-mail may be Web bugs; they're not viruses, but are still undesirable.
6. Click OK.

Gadgets can connect to web services to deliver weather information, news updates, traffic maps, Internet radio streams, and slide shows of online photo albums. Gadgets can also integrate with many of your applications to streamline how you interact with them. For example, a gadget can give you an at-a-glance view of all your online instant messaging contacts, the day view from your calendar, or an easy way to control your media player. Of course, gadgets can also have any number of dedicated purposes. They can be calculators, games, sticky notes, and more.
Microsoft Windows Vista comes with an essential set of gadgets to get you started. You can easily download more gadgets from an online gadget gallery. Using Web-Based E-Mail |

Perhaps the best, easiest, and most secure way of keeping your e-mail out of the unwanted view of others who share your computer is to not keep your e-mail on your computer. Web-based e-mail, such as Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, and others, offer a simple solution. It also has the benefit of not being tied to just one computer, so if you want to access your e-mail from elsewhere, all you need is a Web browser. Find out more about this solution and how IND can help you!
