| IND Presents E-Business Seminar, "Securing Your Enterprise"
Parsippany,
NJ (June 9, 2004) -- IND and Watchguard Technologies
provided an educational seminar yesterday on the
best practices involved in securing businesses
from external and internal threats.
According
to the 2003 FBI Computer Crime and Security Survey, "The
stakes involved in information systems security
have risen. Your organization is vulnerable to
numerous types of attack from many different sources
and the results of an intrusion can be devastating
in terms of lost assets and good will."
The
seminar, held at The Olde Mill Inn in Basking Ridge,
NJ, presented IND's best practice approaches to
securing information technology (IT) systems from
viruses and worms, unauthorized human intrusion
and hackers, and how to manage a response to an
intrusion.
IND's
featured speaker, Peter Emmel, provided valuable
insight into the methodology involved in securing
an enterprise, from evaluating areas of potential
risk, identifying and assessing system criticality
and vulnerability, through security implementation,
user training, evaluation and continued reassessment.
"Today,
security is more critical to the success of a business
than ever before. Companies must constantly monitor,
test and evaluate their system vulnerability," observed
Mr. Emmel, IND's Network Services Manager.
Social
engineering attacks, such as tricking unsuspecting
users into downloading malicious software from
Web sites or e-mail attachments, are common tactics
that are used to gain unauthorized entry. "Employee
training is critical - the most secure network
is still vulnerable to an untrained user," noted
Mr. Emmel.
The
seminar also provided a demonstration by Watchguard
Technologies of how various firewall appliances
defend again common intrusion techniques. Surprisingly,
many other firewalls with base configurations using
factory default settings do not provide protection
against common intrusion techniques.
